Lean on Pete

Andrew Haigh
UK 2017 / 121’
subtitles: Polish (English dialogs)
Girl My Brother's Name Is Robert and He Is an Idiot

A T-shirt and faded jeans are the typical outfit of 15-year-old Charley Thompson (the brilliant Charlie Plummer). He moves with his single father to Portland, Oregon, where he meets Del Montgomery, who offers him a summer job at his stables. Seeking approval, he befriends a racehorse named Pete. Together, they head off on a journey through America's wide-open spaces. Lean on Pete is a coming-of-age story based on a novel of the same title written by Willy Vlautin. Andrew Haigh deftly avoids the clichés typical of films with a child protagonist and animals. He constructs a deeply moving-reminiscent of François Truffaut's The 400Blows-story about the love that drives us all, told through the prism of an unusual friendship. After his acclaimed film 45 Years, Haigh takes a sensitive look at young people looking for their place in the world.
