At Arsenal, good taste will defeat all the other senses to rule the day, unchallenged.
There will be some changes at Arsenal this year. Our slogan, Taste, That's Why, will cover a large variety of events. For the first time, admission to concerts will be free, and the catering area will be larger and open much longer. However, the most important aspect, the program, hasn't changed. It will once again this year include performances by outstanding performers from the avant-garde and experimental scenes. We will have a chance to hear artists with radical, intriguing sounds who are creating music that goes against the flow and defies the demands of the market, which fits in perfectly with the OUT theme that will unify all the various elements of this year's New Horizons.
One of the most important criteria in my work as a curator is to look for unusual connections between music and film, which is usually how I start programming the music scene at the festival. Interestingly, there are quite a number of these film-music outsiders.
This year, we will start on Thursday, 26 July, with the screening of the film Bestia by Aleksander Hertz, with live music by Włodek Pawlik. Exactly a week later, the duo Nanook of the North will be presented: a project inspired by the film precursor Nanook of the North by Robert J. Flaherty. Their album is the perfect soundtrack in which modernity is combined with the raw energy of the nearly century-old film. Invited artists include Iranian producer SOTE, Maja S. K. Ratkje and Demidike Stare representing Norway, as well as Michael England from the United Kingdom.
Ratkje is an unusual singer who plays several instruments. Her concert will be accompanied by a film devoted to the artist behind Voice: Sculpting Sound with Maja S. K. Ratkje. The duet of Demidike Stare, stars of Britain's experimental electronic scene, will be accompanied by short films by visual artist Michael England. Poland will be represented this year by winners of Paszport Polityki awards: Wacław Zimpel (solo) and Syny-in my opinion Poland's most interesting experimental hip-hop project. For fans of dance music, every evening at Arsenal will end with live acts and DJ sets (including through our cooperation with the Regime Brigade collective from Wrocław).
You're all cordially invited to join.
